THE COIL – BALANCING RISKS AND BENEFITS – ADVANTAGES
The coil has many advantages, once fitted it can be forgotten, and sex can be spontaneous. The method seems more natural as it acts on the uterus, in contrast to the Pill which affects the body generally. There is the possibility of pregnancy: ‘I could slip up with the coil and it wouldn’t be my fault!’, but this risk is not great. The tradeoff between heavier menstruation and good protection against pregnancy is one that women can come to terms with easily. Although doctors recommend regular checks, the woman, in contrast to the need to return for new supplies of Pills or spermicide, can avoid the doctor if she has no problems. Once the coil has been inserted, the balance swings back in favour of the couple. Perhaps this is the bargain which makes the fear of insertion worthwhile.
